Queen Kelly

A convent girl loses her knickers in front of a prince's cavalry and is fetched to the palace, where the queen drives her out with a whip down a staircase, and the script then sends her to a brothel in Dar es Salaam to marry a dying planter. Swanson and Joseph Kennedy shut the production down in Africa, and Stroheim never directed another film. Swanson released a European cut with Kelly drowning herself; the restoration adds what was shot of the brothel and fills the gaps with stills; Sunset Boulevard shows a reel of it. What exists is enough to see what was stopped. Seena Owen is the queen. Shot 1928 and 1929, released 1932.
