Pola Negri walks out of the cigarette factory and the crowd scene has a face at the front of it, which is what Lubitsch was learning to do. Mérimée is told as a frame story in a tavern, with Harry Liedtke as Don José. Released in America in 1921 as Gypsy Blood, this is the film that sold Negri to Hollywood.
