Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
Lubitsch again, 1925, Warner Bros., from Wilde: a society wife (May McAvoy) thinks her husband is having an affair; the woman (Irene Rich) is her own mother, returned under another name. Ronald Colman is the husband. Lubitsch cuts Wilde's epigrams and keeps the geometry: doors, fans, a racetrack, a look that arrives too late. It is a silent that understands Wilde better than most talkies, because the wit is in who enters the room.
