Roland West, 1925: Lon Chaney as a mad doctor in an abandoned asylum, a store clerk who wants to be a detective, a girl who disappears. From a Crane Wilbur play. Chaney without the heavy makeup, which is its own disguise. MGM. It is an old-dark-house comedy that keeps becoming a horror film, and Chaney is the reason the joke has a body. The monster is a man with a plan and a basement.
