Pépé is safe as long as he stays inside the Casbah, Inspector Slimane waits for him to leave, and Gaby is the reason he does. A remake of Pépé le Moko made a year after the original, with Duvivier's Casbah footage cut into it and the ending changed for the Code: the police fire the shot Pépé fired himself in the French version. The line about the Casbah is not in it. Charles Boyer, Joseph Calleia, and Hedy Lamarr in her first American film; John Cromwell directed and James Wong Howe shot it. Watch them together.
