James Stewart as Chico, the Paris sewer worker who calls himself a very remarkable fellow, is an unlikely Parisian and does not try to be one. The seventh-floor room, the war, the blindness and the return are kept from the Borzage film of ten years earlier, with Simone Simon as Diane, and the film is a record of what a studio thought it could do with a silent success once the actors could talk. Watch it against the 1927 version, which the site also holds. Jean Hersholt is the priest. Henry King for Fox, 1937.
