Directed by Josef von Sternberg

Josef von Sternberg, 1930: Marlene Dietrich's first American film, a cabaret in Morocco, a Legionnaire (Gary Cooper) who will not stay, a rich man (Adolphe Menjou) who will. Paramount. The tuxedo, the kiss of a woman in the audience, the walk into the desert in high heels. Sternberg invented Dietrich here as a face you light from the side. The plot is who follows whom. The film is the lighting.
