Bird of Paradise

1932 · US

Directed by King Vidor

A sailor falls overboard and is pulled out by a chief's daughter, he takes her from the island, and the volcano wants her back. King Vidor directs the South Seas romance the studio ordered and puts his energy into the water and the light; Dolores del Río swims naked, which is the scene the film was sold on, and Joel McCrea is the sailor. Max Steiner wrote a continuous orchestral score for it, which was new, and set the pattern for what a Hollywood score would be. The ending is the sacrifice the title promises. A David O. Selznick production shot partly in Hawaii, RKO, 1932.
