People on Sunday

Menschen am Sonntag

1930 · 74 min · DE

Directed by Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer

Five Berliners with their own names and jobs, a taxi driver, a wine seller, a record-shop clerk, a film extra and a model, spend a Sunday at the Wannsee, swim, flirt, quarrel, and go back to work on Monday, and between them the film cuts to the city itself, its streets and its people at rest. Nothing is dramatised. Robert Siodmak and Edgar Ulmer directed, Billy Wilder wrote, Fred Zinnemann assisted and Eugen Schüfftan shot, none of them having made a film before; everyone involved was in Hollywood within a decade, and this is where their idea of realism came from. Filmstudio 1929, released February 1930.
