A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire

1906 · 12 min · US

Directed by Harry Miles

A camera bolted to the front of a cable car rides down Market Street from Eighth Street to the Ferry Building, and for twelve minutes nothing is staged except a few automobiles circling back to be seen twice. Boys ride the running boards, a horse stops in the tracks, cars cut across from every direction, and there are no rules yet. The Miles brothers shot it in the spring of 1906, days before the earthquake, and the negative left town on a train the night before. One shot.
