Berlin: Symphony of a Great City

Berlin, die Symphonie der Großstadt

1927 · 69 min · DE

Directed by Walter Ruttmann

Empty streets, then a shutter going up, then a crowd: a day in Berlin from the first train to the last cabaret, cut to a tempo, with no person you follow and every machine you can. Karl Freund shot much of it with hidden cameras. Walter Ruttmann's film named the city symphony, a year after Cavalcanti did it in Paris. 1927, sixty-nine minutes.
