Nothing Sacred

1937 · US

Directed by William A. Wellman

Hazel Flagg of Warsaw, Vermont, is told she is dying of radium poisoning, then told she is not, and a New York reporter has already sold her to the city as a heroine, so she goes along for the trip. The city weeps on cue; the film does not. Carole Lombard and Fredric March trade punches in a hotel room, and the fight is played for keeps. Ben Hecht's script, William Wellman's direction, and the first screwball comedy in colour, and the meanest; the colour restoration is worth seeking out. Walter Connolly is the editor. Selznick International, 1937.
