The Love of Jeanne Ney

Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney

1927 · 113 min · DE

Directed by G.W. Pabst

A drunken officers' party in the Crimea, built from glances and hands, opens the film, and Jeanne Ney's father is shot before it is over by a Bolshevik cell that includes the man she loves. She goes home to Paris to work in her uncle's detective agency; Andreas follows on party business; and Khalibiev, a White adventurer played with reptilian ease by Fritz Rasp, murders the uncle and hangs the crime on him. Pabst cuts on movement so the joins disappear, and that party shows the method at full strength. Brigitte Helm is the blind cousin. From Ilya Ehrenburg's novel, with a happy ending the studio insisted on and Ehrenburg never wrote. Ufa, 1927.
