Balettprimadonnan
1916 · 54 min · SE
Directed by Mauritz Stiller
Mauritz Stiller, 1916: a peasant girl (Jenny Hasselquist, already prima ballerina at the Royal Opera) is pushed from a tavern floor to the ballet academy by a poor violinist (Lars Hanson). A count (Richard Lund) sends the violinist abroad and tells her he has forgotten her. Svenska Bio, photographed by Julius Jaenzon. Long thought lost; fragments of a Spanish nitrate turned up in Zaragoza and Madrid, and the Swedish Film Institute restored what remains in 2016, about half the original, with stills and titles for the gaps. The night scene in the hunting pavilion is the film that survived. So is Hasselquist, dancing as herself before the camera knew what to do with a dancer.
