Lamont Cranston is a radio crime commentator with a column and an assistant named Phoebe Lane, a bank vault is blown while he is on the air, and foreign agents are behind it. None of the pulp Shadow survives the translation, no cloak, no laugh, no invisibility, a wisecracking reporter instead, and the film is a record of what a small studio thought a radio hero should look like before the radio hero was famous enough to insist.
