Kozintsev and Trauberg, 1926, Leningrad: Gogol's clerk and Gogol's Nevsky Prospect, folded into one FEKS picture about a man and a coat. Andrei Kostrichkin is Bashmachkin. The city is expressionist, the coat is a character, the ending is Gogol's cruelty intact. Factory of the Eccentric Actor, before they went historical. It is the Soviet avant-garde doing a nineteenth-century short story as if the story had been waiting for montage.
