L'Arlésienne
1908 · 18 min · FR
Directed by Albert Capellani
Frédéri goes to the bullfight at Arles, sees a woman, and forgets the girl at home; the woman has a past he cannot live with, and the farm has to hold a man who has stopped fitting in it. Albert Capellani filmed Daudet's story in 1908 with Provençal exteriors and let the landscape say what a title card would have, and Bizet's music is in your head already. Pathé, eighteen minutes.
