G.W. Pabst, 1925, Sofar-Film, Vienna after the war. Greta Garbo is Greta Rumfort, whose family slides toward the butcher and the brothel on Melchiorgasse; Asta Nielsen takes the darker rooms. Hyperinflation is the weather. Werner Krauss is the butcher who can ration meat as power. Pabst shot it as a street, not a sermon. Garbo left for Hollywood on the back of this and The Saga of Gösta Berling. Surviving prints are shorter than the premiere; censors and recuts thinned Nielsen’s line. The joyless street is an address.
