Warner Bros.' lavish melodrama set in pre-earthquake San Francisco, featuring one of early Hollywood's most spectacular disaster sequences. A villainous Chinatown crime lord (Warner Oland in yellowface, unfortunately typical of the era) schemes to seize a rancher's valuable property, leading to a confrontation that climaxes with the devastating 1906 earthquake — a sequence of remarkable technical ambition for 1927. Anna May Wong appears in a small but memorable role. The film is a fascinating time capsule: it contains an early synchronized Vitaphone sound sequence (released just months before The Jazz Singer), and while its racial politics are deeply of their time, its sheer spectacle and production values remain impressive. The earthquake destruction is genuinely thrilling.
