A Story of Floating Weeds

A travelling kabuki troupe comes to a mountain town where the manager has a former mistress and a son who thinks him an uncle; his present mistress finds out and sends a young actress to seduce the boy; the rains keep the troupe idle, the money runs out, and the company breaks up. Takeshi Sakamoto is Kihachi, the role he played for Ozu through the mid-thirties, and the film is silent, with the low camera and the cut to a still object Ozu had settled into. He remade it in colour in 1959, and this one is the sparer of the two. Kinema Junpo's film of the year. Shochiku, 1934.
