Alice Guy-Blaché, Solax, 1912: a one-reel comedy with an all-Black cast, the first American narrative film known to do so. James Russell is Sam Jones, a whitewasher who finds a wad of cash, buys clothes and a car, and wins back Lindy, who had dropped him for a rival. At the engagement party the rival and a card shark take the fortune. Working title Darktown Aristocrats. A nitrate print turned up in a California trunk; the AFI preserved it at the Library of Congress.
