Nazimova put her own money into this Wilde Salomé and lost it. Charles Bryant directed; Natacha Rambova built a Beardsley court of white wigs, painted floors, and a prophet in a cistern. Nazimova's Salomé wants Jokaanan's mouth; Herod wants her dance; the Baptist wants nothing from the palace. It failed in 1923 and was adopted decades later as a queer touchstone. An American art film before Hollywood had a name for that.
