James Cagney, 1937, Grand National: a New York bandleader goes to Hollywood, becomes a star, and wants to go home. Victor Schertzinger directed. Cagney between Warner contracts, dancing, singing, throwing a punch at the studio system from a Poverty Row lot. It is a backstage picture about a man who will not be owned, made at the studio that could not afford to own him. The songs are fine. The walk is Cagney's.
