The Ten Commandments

Cecil B. DeMille's original biblical spectacular — the film that established his reputation as Hollywood's master showman and the template for every religious epic that followed. The first half dramatizes the Exodus story with jaw-dropping sets, thousands of extras, and the parting of the Red Sea (achieved with practical effects that still impress). Then DeMille does something unexpected: the second half jumps to modern-day San Francisco, where two brothers — one who follows the Commandments, one who breaks them all — play out a morality tale of ambition, corruption, and divine retribution. It's this bold structural gamble that gives the film its unique flavor. DeMille would remake it in 1956 with Charlton Heston, but this original version has a wild, anything-goes energy that the bloated remake can't match.
