Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge

The thunderous second half of Fritz Lang's Nibelungen saga, and in many ways the more extraordinary achievement. Kriemhild, consumed by grief and rage over Siegfried's murder, marries Attila the Hun solely to gain command of his armies and engineer her revenge against the Burgundian court that betrayed her. What follows is an apocalyptic crescendo of siege warfare, burning halls, and mass destruction that pushes the Expressionist aesthetic to its absolute limit. Lang orchestrates thousands of extras with a geometric precision that anticipates his work on Metropolis, building to a finale of operatic, almost nihilistic grandeur. If Part One was a fairy tale, Part Two is a war film — and one of the most visually overwhelming experiences in all of silent cinema.
