Directed by Cecil B. DeMille, Oscar Apfel
Cecil B. DeMille's first feature, 1914, with Oscar Apfel: an English captain (Dustin Farnum) takes the blame for a theft, flees to the American West, and marries a Native woman, Nat-U-Rich (Red Wing). From the play. It is the first feature shot in Hollywood, more or less, and the template for every DeMille western that followed: honor, exile, a marriage the East will not accept. Famous Players-Lasky before the name. The West is a second chance that costs a person.
